Think Like a Scientist is a half-day immersive business experience at the Taylor Institute, bringing together leaders from our community that want to discuss the challenge of scaling innovation in their respective organizations. Hosted by the University of Calgary in collaboration with JFIVE, an innovation strategy and design consultancy, this is a unique opportunity to learn how organizations can cultivate cultures of experimentation to endure, thrive and innovate in challenging markets.

 

Event Speakers

Dr. David Cramb, Head of Chemistry, University of Calgary By literally taking us back to university, Dr. Cramb will demonstrate how curiosity and a scientific approach can provide any organization with a mindset for problem solving, and a logical way of testing assumptions to remove causal effects and organizational bias. The scientific method is largely responsible for rapidly increasing our understanding of the natural world, yet it has been slow to enter the world of business.  Dr. Cramb believes that as innovation leaders such as Facebook, Google, and Amazon continue to exploit the benefits of data science and experimentation, the scientific method will become more pervasive and common.

Lorne Rubis, Chief Evangelist, ATB FINANCIAL Lorne will share how creating a culture of experimentation is fundamental to instilling innovation at ATB. Experimentation requires support from leadership, and Lorne is currently at the centre of harnessing the full idea and innovation potential of the entire workforce at ATB, creating, monitoring, and improving the team's dynamic culture. Lorne joined ATB as Chief People Officer in 2012, with the mandate to make ATB The Place to Work. The constant in Lorne’s diverse career is his ability to successfully lead organizations through significant change, including his time at the LA Kings Hockey Club where, as VP of Business Operations, he improved operations and oversaw the development of Staples Center and its innovative premium seating strategy.

After attending a leadership retreat at Necker Island hosted by Richard Branson, Suzanne wrote a manifesto named Project Stepup.  In her keynote, she will share her manifesto and how it is a call for collaboration, with academics working on new technology, with other oil and gas companies to share best practices, ideas and joint ventures, and with other renewable energy companies to develop and ultimately switch energy sources “rather than just wait for the eventual end of fossil fuel use and no longer have a viable company.

EVENT THEME: INNOVATION STARTS WITH EXPERIMENTATION

For most organizations, innovation is often seen as a risky and costly endeavour fraught with uncertainty and no clear return on investment. At the same time, we’re told if we don’t innovate we’ll be left behind. Faculty and students at the University of Calgary are conducting leading research in the fields of cancer medication and nanotechnology. Research, like a business, is bound by constraints. Yet, breakthroughs in science, medicine and technology are accelerating at an unprecedented rate.  By starting with experimentation, organizations can begin to strike a balance between the risk taking that’s necessary to innovate, and the structure required to deliver certainty.
